L’ADU
L’ADU is our winning proposal for a new Accessory Dwelling Unit for the City of Kingston, NY
It all started with what most backyard ADUs in your backyard won’t give you: Privacy.
We began with the most basic envelope, easy to build, and form-effective. Then we cut out a corner for a small sanctuary courtyard. Finally, we raised the roof above the kitchen to bring in more natural light and views of the sky. The result is a compact, 460 sqft building that defines its interior and exterior space without disturbing the building owners’ private yards and habits.
At the same time, the privacy of the ADU renters is protected without giving up light, air comfort, and access to an independent outdoor space.

The Accessory Dwelling Unit on a typical lot in Kingston can be configured in many ways.
The gated courtyard, which is the most exposed part of the ADU, can be rotated to any preferred orientation to achieve the desired level of interaction and privacy, or to optimize sun exposure. The raised clerestory windows provide natural light and views of the sky, while maintaining privacy in the less exposed rooms of the ADU.
L’ADU drawings are free and pre-approved for construction to anyone living within the City of Kingston.
